The Driver of Health: Health Literacy

Greeting Stewards,

Health literacy is a vital skill to navigate our current healthcare system, and recently the American Medical Association wrote an article about how boosting health literacy can also potentially boost health equity. Lisa Fitzpatrick, a physician interviewed for the article, says that “health literacy is the driver of health.”

Inadequate health literacy can leave people struggling to understand the health issues and options they face, thereby putting their health at risk and leading to negative outcomes.

Understanding that health literacy leads to success in navigating one’s own health and Dr. Fitzpatrick started a YouTube series called “Dr. Lisa on the Street” where she talks herself to passersby about healthcare and communication between patients and doctors. What a great example of healthcare stewardship in action!

Warmly,

Asheanna
