Resilience As Told Through Art

Greeting Stewards!

As we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, many stories are left untold. Sharing your stories and experiences can be a rewarding experience for both the storyteller and the listener. But these stories can take different forms—written stories, oral stories, music, art.

In North Vancouver, a mosaic art piece that shares COVID-19 stories was just unveiled. Titled “At Home,” this exhibit was assembled in two phases. In the first phase, people in the North Vancouver area submitted their COVID-19 stories and images, which were turned into a digital mosaic into the shape of heart and showcased in the Shipyards District.

From there, the second phase was initiated. Local artist, Blake Williams, saw selected images, drawings, paintings and photographs to create the public piece. North Vancouver Mayor, Linda Buchanan, states, “The At Home mosaic was one of the collective’s projects initiated to strengthen our resilience and provide hope.”

This article shows how narrative and story can be healing during times of trauma and uncertainty. We hope to create the feelings of resilience and hope in our forums as well, as we  explore our collective experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty it has wrought in our lives.
