Doctor-Patient Communication Resources

Greeting Stewards,

We hope that you are taking good care of yourselves as winter presses onward into this new year.

As you know, the purpose of PAHS is to help people become better stewards of the healthcare system and their own health. The healthcare system can be a confusing place to navigate, and we believe that doctor-patient communication is vital to quality of care—and we love seeing stewardship in action!

The National Institute of Aging has a resources page for doctor-patient communication full of various tips and tricks aimed towards helping older patients. The page states that “communicating well with your doctor is an important part of getting good medical care. These articles and worksheets can help you prepare for a medical appointment, discuss sensitive topics, manage your medications, choose a new doctor, and coordinate help from family caregivers.”

Also, for the caregivers/providers, the site offers a tab for “Talking With Your Older Patient” as well! A visit to the doctor is a two-way street. Trust and understanding between a provider and patient are a must.

If you have not yet signed up for our symposium, there is still time and space! To reiterate, PAHS is hosting out 2nd annual symposium on January 21, 2023. Our symposium is the accumulation and continuation of our work from the forums. It will take place online again this year via Zoom with Clarence Jones of HUE-Man as the keynote speaker.

Warmly,

Asheanna
